Long time ago there was a girl who liked reading fairy tales. Book was thick and full of pictures, outside was snowing and the cat was purring on her lap. Here there are legends and legendary stories about the past wish still can bee seen if you are lucky to travel across British Islands. I have put them together in Russian language so that girl in the big armchair can sit there with her book for ever and ever.
Modern myths
The Mythology from the past transformed by the literature talents. This way Arthur
became the heroic, chivalric figure that we've fallen in love with. In reality if
there was king Arthur he must be one of the dark ages figures fighting off the Picts
and Saxon invaders.
Sherlock Holmes is not the literary character anymore - he is the superhero. I don’t
know what is more fascinating – the original character created by Conan Doyle or
the mythic transformation of him we love. Sherlock Holmes is the only one who can
bring justice when there is no hope left.
Mary Poppins is another example of myth making process. Many people who love the
super nanny have no idea of the real author – Pamela Travers; a lot of them think
it is Disney’s movie brought this enchanting figure into real life. Coming from the
sky above, talking to the birds and dancing in the moon she is forever needed in
any childhood.
Alice in Wonderland – the idyllic picture of pleasant summer afternoon, mad teatime
with jam and butter, the very clever mind of the Charles Lewis Carroll switching
on our unconsciousness. In that world there is nothing like impossible things and
we have to run very fast in order to stay where we are – this is indeed very true
for our increasingly complex and stressful world.
Немного о том, как это все создается. В основном, между писанием завещаний и налогами на наследство, чему в Англии придают немало значения. Фамильные замки не часто фигурируют среди частного имущества: слишком расточительно. А вот за честь завладеть прадедовскими часами родственники могут годами затевать распри, подавать в суд и платить адвокатам. Чем стариннее атрибут - тем почетнее. Сами посудите, я почти каждый день пользуюсь законом 1870 года. Самые ходовые датируются 1912 и 1925 годами, ну а 1986 - можно сказать, современность. Во всяком случае, относительно женского возраста эти даты выглядят очень даже привлекательно. Сегодня, однако, население в панике: премьер министры и обе палаты в последнее время вводят новообразования с непозволительной поспешностью. После 2000 года только и знают, что принимают, принимают... Остается надеяться, что так оно и будет продолжаться, и я смогу зарабатывать себе на хлеб с помощью британского законодательства. А в свободное от налогов и завещаний время буду продолжать писать и переводить.
